Crossbencher Member of Parliament Mosese Bulitavu has expressed his support for the recent release of George Speight, the civilian leader known for his role in a coup. Mr. Bulitavu has become the first MP from the G9 coalition to comment on Speight’s release, which was granted Presidential immunity following a review by the Mercy Commission.
In his statement, Mr. Bulitavu emphasized the importance of moving forward from past events and promoting reconciliation. He noted that the Fiji Military Forces are leading efforts in this regard, and he believes that Speight’s release represents a positive step towards healing.
Mr. Bulitavu also related his own experiences, noting that only a few politicians who have served time in prison can fully understand the need for second chances for rehabilitated individuals. He called for society to shift its perspective on former offenders and to embrace those who have undergone rehabilitation processes in the Fiji Corrections Service.
