Motorists are being warned against the formation of Viber groups intended to share information about police traffic checkpoints and speed radar locations, a tactic aimed at evading enforcement of road safety regulations. Acting Divisional Police Commander for the Northern region, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, expressed concern that these groups undermine police operations and pose significant risks to road safety.
According to SP Soqosoqo, drivers who use these alerts tend to slow down near checkpoints but often accelerate afterward, which can lead to accidents. He stressed that such behaviors disrupt police operations, and participants in these groups will face consequences. The police are collaborating closely with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to ensure road safety and remove reckless drivers from the roads, especially with the New Year’s celebrations just around the corner.
The LTA has also pointed out that driver fatigue is a major contributor to road accidents in Fiji, urging motorists to take breaks during long trips to mitigate risks. They encourage passengers to be vigilant and speak up if they notice any signs of fatigue or erratic driving. Adopting a “Stop, Revive, and Survive” approach is being advocated as a means to enhance road safety and minimize accidents.
Both the police and LTA are emphasizing the importance of their roles in promoting road safety, highlighting that any interference with their operations, such as creating platforms for alerting drivers about checkpoints, must cease. This is critical for making roads safer for everyone.
In summary, the collaboration between the police and LTA is essential in maintaining road safety, especially during busy times like the festive season. By raising awareness about the dangers of driver fatigue and discouraging the sharing of checkpoint information, authorities hope to foster a more responsible driving culture.
It’s hopeful that with increased awareness and cooperation among drivers, passengers, and authorities, the roads can become much safer for everyone, thus contributing to a more secure year ahead.
