The Police M-PAiSA Task Force is intensifying its efforts to combat the alarming rise in scams that target users of the M-PAiSA platform, particularly during the critical period of the government’s Back to School Assistance funds distribution. Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has issued a strong warning, urging the public, especially parents and guardians, to remain vigilant when making withdrawals.

This advisory comes as families prepare to access the recently allocated $200 assistance from the government, which has become an attractive target for opportunistic scam artists. Fong Chew stressed the importance of adult supervision during financial transactions, explicitly advising against allowing children or unaccompanied individuals to handle withdrawals. He cautioned, “You don’t know who is at the sidelines exploring the opportunity to steal information or money,” highlighting the risks involved.

To enhance financial security, the Acting Commissioner also emphasized the need for individuals to be cautious with their sensitive personal information, such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and passwords. He noted that recovery from scams can be a lengthy and complex process requiring significant involvement from law enforcement.

This message echoes a broader initiative from the Fiji Police Force, which has previously highlighted the rising prevalence of scams during financially active periods such as the back-to-school season. Scammers often exploit popular communication platforms like text messaging, WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook to solicit personal information or money through deceptive requests.

In addition to raising awareness, the police are promoting community education about common scams and encouraging families to adopt safe financial practices. By fostering discussions about potential threats, communities can collectively enhance their resilience against financial exploitation.

In summary, this proactive approach underscores the importance of vigilance and responsible financial behavior during critical times like the back-to-school season. By staying informed and working together, families can protect their finances and contribute to a safer, more supportive community. This collective focus on awareness is not just about protecting individual families from scams but also about strengthening community ties, encouraging a unified stand against fraud and creating an environment where families can thrive.
