The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, stressed the importance of prioritizing children’s welfare after a report emerged about a toddler found wandering alone at Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Two women discovered the toddler and took him to a nearby police station. Following this incident, police called for public assistance in identifying the child’s parents or guardians. Fortunately, the toddler was reunited with his family after the appeal gained attention online.
ACP Chew indicated that the police would thoroughly investigate all incidents of child neglect and may pursue legal action against negligent parents or guardians. He noted that this is not an isolated incident, highlighting past cases where lack of supervision led to dangerous situations, including drownings, burns, and accidents.
He emphasized the need for vigilance, saying, “Children are young and inquisitive, and just a few seconds of inattention can lead to tragedy.” He urged parents and guardians to be more observant of the children in their care.
In a related statement, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran also called on parents and guardians to prioritize the safety and well-being of children. She highlighted the tragic death of a one-year-old boy in Navua, who was reportedly struck by a vehicle after leaving home unnoticed.
“It’s crucial to consider child protection seriously,” she said, acknowledging that while it can be challenging for parents, especially in urban areas, to find adequate childcare, it is essential to ensure children are not neglected to prevent incidents that could lead to loss of life.
