Police are actively searching for a man who was seen watching a woman through her window in a recent unsettling video that has raised significant concerns about safety and police responsiveness in the Western Division. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu addressed these concerns, emphasizing the importance of timely and effective police responses, particularly in relation to breaches of Domestic Violence Restraining Orders (DVRO).

The incident gained public attention after the victim expressed frustration on social media, stating she contacted the police for assistance but had not received a response two hours later. Following the video’s circulation, the Divisional Police Commander for the West reached out to the complainant, confirming that a report relating to the incident was officially filed.

Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged that slow responses to domestic violence situations have been a persistent issue. He reiterated the need for frontline officers to prioritize basic policing duties and treat every complaint with urgency and seriousness. This directive is a part of a broader initiative to enhance accountability and responsiveness within the police force, aimed at rebuilding trust with the community.

In a similar context, increasing public scrutiny has highlighted the need for systemic reforms within the Fiji Police Force. Past statements by police leadership and organizations such as the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) call for better training and adherence to established protocols when handling domestic violence issues. The need for urgent investigations and improved training for officers, particularly regarding the “No Drop” policy—ensuring diligent follow-up on all domestic violence complaints—is crucial for effective enforcement of justice.

Community responses and reforms initiated, such as the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, are hopeful steps toward ensuring a safer environment for vulnerable individuals, particularly women. Collaboration between police and community organizations is essential in addressing this pressing issue effectively.

Through these efforts, there is a sense of optimism that future police reforms will lead to increased accountability and a more supportive framework for protecting individuals affected by domestic violence. Overall, the commitment from law enforcement, alongside community advocacy, reflects a hopeful path toward enhancing safety and security.
