Law enforcement agencies are intensifying their efforts to combat illegal drug activities during the holiday season. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has made it clear that anyone suspected of involvement with drugs will be a target for police operations.
During this busy period, police will be monitoring known drug hotspots and conducting checks on vehicles and vessels suspected of harboring drug-related activities. ACP Driu highlighted that the police are making daily drug-related arrests as part of their commitment to curtail the illicit drug trade, especially during the festive season when such activities may increase.
Recently, a significant arrest occurred at the Nadonumai roundabout in Lami, near Suva. A routine vehicle inspection led to an incident where the driver allegedly threatened an officer, prompting a deeper investigation. With the help of the K-9 unit, law enforcement uncovered a clear plastic wrapper containing five dried branches and leaves suspected to be marijuana. Following this, a search of the suspect’s home yielded a zip-lock plastic bag filled with additional dried leaves believed to be marijuana. The individual is currently in custody at Lami Police Station and is facing further investigation.
ACP Driu urged the community to collaborate with the police in their ongoing fight against drug-related crimes, underscoring that this particular operation is a part of a broader strategy to tackle substance abuse and trafficking during the festive season.
In a time often marked by celebration, this concerted effort to crack down on drugs is a hopeful sign of the police’s commitment to ensuring safer communities. Working hand-in-hand with the public can potentially lead to a more peaceful holiday season, where families can enjoy festivities without the shadow of drug-related issues.
