Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu has announced that law enforcement will escalate their drug operations during the holiday season. Underlining a comprehensive approach, he noted efforts to not only disrupt drug syndicates through general and covert operations but also through strategic intelligence.

The police have expanded their focus beyond residential areas and known suspects, engaging in vehicle checks and patrolling targeted locations based on received information. Mr. Driu expressed gratitude for the support from community leaders, emphasizing that the battle against drugs requires a collaborative effort.

Recent trends indicate a notable reduction in methamphetamine discoveries alongside a rise in marijuana seizures. Notably, last week, several arrests were made following police operations at local borders and wharves, particularly when K9 units searched a vessel from Kadavu at the Narain Jetty.

While meth findings have decreased over the past two months, the increase in marijuana usage remains a concern. The police plan to fortify their road operations, including the establishment of checkpoints, to deter reckless driving and promote road safety. Mr. Driu remarked on the positive change in driver behavior when checkpoints are visible, highlighting the effectiveness of their presence in enhancing community safety.

As the police ramp up efforts to address drug issues, there is hope that these sustained and collaborative operations will contribute to a safer community during the festive season and beyond. Community involvement, combined with proactive policing, can lead to a significant reduction in drug-related activities, fostering a healthier environment for all.
