Police Ramp Up Crackdown on Holiday Drug Trade

Police are actively addressing the rising issue of drug-related activities as the festive season draws near. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu indicated that efforts to combat both white drugs, such as methamphetamine, and green drugs, like marijuana, are being vigorously implemented in all five policing divisions.

In Labasa, law enforcement apprehended two individuals during separate operations. A 55-year-old man from Vunivau was taken into custody after officers discovered zip lock bags containing a white substance believed to be methamphetamine. Simultaneously, a 52-year-old man from Siberia was arrested for possessing a similar substance along with smoking devices.

In Raiwaqa, police found two students, aged 15 and 16, with dried leaves thought to be marijuana during a search conducted at their school. Additionally, in Ba, a 33-year-old man was arrested after police uncovered multiple bullets of dried leaves also suspected to be marijuana.

ACP Driu highlighted that police operations are fueled by information and intelligence from the community. He cautioned that both kinds of illicit drugs present considerable dangers to society, stating, “With young lives at stake, we cannot afford to be selective in our approach,” and emphasized the need for ongoing cooperation with the public.
