The Nausori Magistrate’s court has moved the assault case of a 21-year-old police officer, Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto, to the High Court in Suva. Colamoto is facing a charge of an act intended to cause grievous harm related to an alleged assault on Vilikesa Bari that occurred on November 17 of this year.

During the court proceedings on Friday, Police Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma presented a request for the case to be transferred, which the magistrate approved.

Colamoto has been granted bail under specific conditions. He must pay a $100 cash bail bond, provide two sureties, surrender all travel documents, comply with a stop departure order, refrain from committing any further offenses while on bail, and avoid any interference with state witnesses.

The officer is scheduled to appear in the High Court on January 20, 2025, where he will receive case disclosures and enter his plea. He has also been afforded the opportunity to consult with a Legal Aid lawyer.

This case underscores the judicial process in addressing criminal allegations, ensuring that due process is followed while protecting the rights of both the accused and the victim. As the legal proceedings continue, it offers a chance for clarity and justice for all parties involved.

Summary: A police officer’s assault case has been transferred from Nausori Magistrate’s court to the High Court in Suva, with bail conditions set for his release until the next court appearance in January 2025.
