The assault case involving a 21-year-old Police officer, Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto, has been moved from the Nausori Magistrate’s court to the High Court in Suva. On November 17, Colamoto allegedly assaulted Vilikesa Bari, leading to a charge of an act intended to cause grievous harm.
During a court appearance on Friday, Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi approved a request from Police Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma to transfer the case to the higher court. The court has granted bail to Colamoto, contingent upon several conditions, including a $100 cash bail bond, the provision of two sureties, surrender of travel documents, adherence to a stop departure order, and a requirement to avoid offending or interfering with witnesses while out on bail.
Colamoto’s next court date is set for January 20, 2025, when he will receive disclosure documents and enter his plea. He is also allowed time to seek advice from a Legal Aid lawyer.
This case underscores the judiciary’s commitment to handling allegations of misconduct within law enforcement agencies with seriousness and impartiality, ensuring accountability while providing the accused an opportunity for legal representation. It reflects a system that strives for fairness and justice for all parties involved.
Overall, it’s a critical moment that highlights the judicial processes in place to address such serious matters in a transparent manner.
