The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has decided to transfer the assault case of a 21-year-old police officer to the High Court in Suva. Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto faced Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi on a charge of intending to cause grievous harm following an alleged assault on Vilikesa Bari, which took place on November 17 of this year.

During the proceedings, Police Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma requested the matter be escalated to the High Court, a request that was approved by the court.

Colamoto was granted bail under several conditions, including the payment of a $100 cash bail bond and two sureties. He must surrender all travel documents, comply with a stop departure order, refrain from committing any offenses while on bail, and avoid interaction with State witnesses.

The officer is scheduled to appear in the High Court in Suva on January 20, 2025, for the disclosure of evidence and to enter a plea. He has been provided the opportunity to consult with a Legal Aid lawyer about his case.

It’s important to note the judicial system’s approach to ensuring accountability while also allowing the accused the chance to prepare his defense. This reflects a balance between the rights of the accused and the need for justice for the victim.

As the case progresses, it will be very important for all parties involved to adhere to the court’s conditions, fostering a fair and orderly judicial process.
