The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has transferred the assault case of a 21-year-old police officer to the High Court in Suva. Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto appeared before Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi, facing one count of an act intended to cause grievous harm following an alleged incident involving Vilikesa Bari on November 17 of this year.

Police Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma requested the transfer, and the court approved this application. As part of the bail conditions, Colamoto is required to pay a $100 cash bail bond, provide two sureties, surrender his travel documents, adhere to a stop departure order, refrain from reoffending while on bail, and avoid any interference with State witnesses.

Colamoto is scheduled to appear in the High Court in Suva on January 20, 2025, where he will receive necessary disclosures and enter his plea. The court has also allowed him time to seek assistance from a Legal Aid lawyer.

This case highlights the judicial system’s commitment to handling serious allegations with due process, ensuring that all parties involved have their rights accounted for. It also serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a member of law enforcement. As the legal proceedings continue, there is hope for a resolution that upholds justice while allowing for personal accountability and rehabilitation.

Summary: The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has moved a case of alleged assault by a police officer to the High Court in Suva, setting bail conditions and a future court date. The situation underscores the importance of accountability within law enforcement.
