A police officer in Nausori has been charged following an alleged assault on a man last November and is set to appear in the Nausori Magistrates Court today. The Fiji Police Force reported that the officer faces a charge of “Act Intended to Cause Grievous Harm.”

According to the man’s account, he approached the officer for assistance after his brother was hit. However, instead of providing help, the officer allegedly responded with violence, reportedly striking the man on the head and continuing to beat him at the police station.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the importance of adherence to the rule of law, reminding all officers of their accountability. This situation serves as a critical reminder that integrity and responsibility in policing are essential to maintaining public trust.

This case signals a commitment to addressing misconduct and ensuring that law enforcement officers uphold the principles of justice, which is a hopeful sign for community relations. Such actions may contribute positively to fostering accountability within the police force and rebuilding public confidence in law enforcement.
