A police officer in Nausori has been charged with assaulting a man in November and is set to appear in the Nausori Magistrates Court today. The Fiji Police Force confirmed that the officer faces one count of Act Intended to Cause Grievous Harm.
The incident came to light when the alleged victim informed the officer about an attack on his brother. Rather than providing assistance, it is claimed that the officer placed the man in a police vehicle and struck him on the head before continuing to assault him while at the station.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the importance of accountability, reminding officers that they must adhere to the rule of law in their duties, as everyone is answerable to the law.
This situation highlights the ongoing need for accountability within law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that all officers must conduct themselves with integrity and respect for the rights of citizens.
In a positive light, this incident may lead to reforms and increased training for police officers, fostering a culture of respect and accountability within the force, which ultimately benefits both the police and the communities they serve.
