In a commendable effort to reinforce integrity and restore public confidence, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, alongside senior leadership, has undergone drug testing. This initiative is part of a wider commitment to ensure a drug-free environment within the Fiji Police Force.

Acting Commissioner Chew highlighted the importance of leadership setting a positive example to promote a workplace absent of drugs. He stated, “We are finalising a mandatory drug testing policy, developed in consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office, in line with Fiji’s laws.” He believes it’s crucial for the leadership of the Fiji Police Force to take proactive measures to change public perceptions regarding police involvement in drug-related activities.

This initiative includes not only the Acting Commissioner but also senior members of the police force, such as the Acting Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners, who have also undergone drug testing. It further encompasses senior officers, including Directors and other high-ranking officials within the police command.

The forthcoming mandatory drug testing policy is designed to incorporate best practices from international law enforcement agencies. Acting Commissioner Chew stressed the importance of this initiative in addressing the public’s worries about potential police engagement with illegal drugs. “We recognise that public trust in the police has been eroded by various factors, particularly the perception of police officers being involved in drug-related activities. Our objective is to establish a drug-free institution that operates without corruption or misconduct,” he stated.

The introduction of this policy is one of several strategies aimed at promoting accountability and professionalism within the police force. Furthermore, Acting Commissioner Chew assured that all new policies would be meticulously developed in consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office, ensuring they align with Fiji’s legal standards and international best practices.

This proactive initiative reflects a hopeful trajectory towards rebuilding public trust in law enforcement and ensuring the integrity of the Fiji Police Force. By committing to transparency and accountability, the leadership is not only addressing concerns but also reinforcing a commitment to uphold the highest standards of conduct in serving the community.
