In a significant effort to promote integrity and restore public confidence, Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew, along with senior leadership, has voluntarily undergone drug testing. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring a clean and drug-free Fiji Police Force.

Emphasizing the importance of leadership by example, Acting Commissioner Chew stated, “We are finalizing a mandatory drug testing policy, developed in consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office, which aligns with Fiji’s laws.” He underlined the necessity for the police leadership to take proactive steps to positively shift public perceptions regarding police involvement in drug-related activities.

In addition to the Acting Commissioner, senior officials, including the Acting Deputy Commissioner and various Assistant Commissioners, have also participated in the drug testing initiative. This move is set to extend to other high-ranking officers within the Command group and aims to instill confidence in the integrity of the police force.

The upcoming mandatory drug testing policy will draw from effective practices employed by international law enforcement agencies. The Acting Commissioner acknowledged that public trust in the police has been compromised, particularly due to the perception of officers’ involvement in drug-related crimes. “Our goal is to foster a drug-free institution that operates without corruption or misconduct,” he added, reiterating that this initiative is part of a larger commitment to accountability and professionalism within the Fiji Police Force.

Moreover, Acting Commissioner Chew assured that these new regulations would be carefully evaluated and developed in consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office to adhere to Fiji’s legal standards and best practices.

This initiative represents a positive step toward enhancing transparency and accountability in law enforcement, aiming to rebuild the community’s trust in their police force. Through these measures, the Fiji Police Force is setting an example for accountability that could inspire similar efforts in law enforcement agencies worldwide.
