Police in Fiji have seized equipment suspected to be intended for use in illicit drug laboratories. The consignment originated from British Columbia.
At this point, authorities have not specified the exact type of equipment confiscated.
Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew detailed that combined task forces from the Western and Eastern divisions, along with K9 units like the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, intercepted the shipment at a warehouse in Nadi on Friday.
“Analysis conducted on substances found in several containers returned negative for illicit substances,” Fong Chew reported.
“Since the detected substances, while common medications, are also known precursors, our investigation is now focusing on the aspect of potential drug manufacturing.
“This focus is warranted as numerous cartons contained equipment and apparatuses typically used in the production of illegal drugs.”
The commissioner emphasized the importance of this seizure, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat all forms of illegal drug activity, including unlawful possession, cultivation, importation, and manufacturing.
Six individuals have been detained for questioning, with additional interrogations anticipated.
