Three officers from the Nauru Police Force have returned home after a transformative two-week attachment with the Fiji Police Force, describing their experience as eye-opening and unforgettable. Sergeant Christopher Dowiyogo, Sergeant Brando Tabaia, and Constable Anthony Dabwadauw departed Fiji after gaining insights from various specialised units within the Fiji Police.
Reflecting on the visit, Sergeant Dowiyogo expressed a desire for a longer stay, highlighting the strong professional and personal bonds he formed during his time in Fiji. Constable Dabwadauw, who observed community policing approaches, emphasized the effectiveness of these methods in engaging with Pacific communities.
The attachment was officially concluded with a farewell from Senior Superintendent of Police Ulaiasi Ravula, who noted the successful blend of education and camaraderie that the Nauru officers experienced. This collaboration falls under the UNDP Pacific Office-supported Nauru Accountable and Inclusive Governance Project, aligning with regional efforts toward improved law enforcement cooperation through organizations like the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP).
This initiative is a continuation of the Fiji Police Force’s ongoing support for the Nauru Police, which has included training placements and joint programs designed to bolster policing capabilities across the Pacific. Such collaborations not only strengthen individual police forces but also promote enhanced safety and security in the region.
The sharing of policing techniques and community-engaged strategies illustrates a hopeful path forward for law enforcement in the Pacific Islands, fostering stronger ties and a collective commitment to community safety. These ongoing partnerships signify positive growth and the promise of more effective policing methods across the region.
