The Fiji Police Force has implemented movement restrictions in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki Town due to rising water levels that are affecting shops in these areas. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that these measures are essential for public safety and to protect the towns’ infrastructure.
Driu explained that the restrictions aim to ensure the safety of residents and to deter opportunistic behavior during the crisis. Currently, four evacuation centers are operational in the Western Division, accommodating 226 individuals, with this number expected to increase if inclement weather continues.
At present, the main highway between Ba and Rakiraki is closed to all traffic, as is the entrance to Tavua Town. Additionally, the entry point into Ba town is also closed off to ensure public safety. Police units are actively engaged in evacuating residents from high-risk areas and will maintain readiness throughout the night, with ongoing monitoring of the situation by the Fiji Police Force.
This proactive response by authorities highlights the commitment to community safety during difficult times. While the current circumstances are challenging, the efforts of law enforcement and rescue teams demonstrate resilience and dedication to support affected individuals.
In summary, this situation showcases the importance of safety measures during environmental crises, as well as the role of community solidarity and support in overcoming such challenges.
