Police in the Southern Division are emphasizing the importance of ethics and public trust as overall crime rates continue to decline. Senior Superintendent Koro Lesikimaloku, the Divisional Police Commander for the South, highlighted that maintaining consistency, integrity, and accountability is crucial for sustaining public confidence, particularly with the holiday season approaching.
Recent crime statistics for the first quarter of the 2025–2026 period reveal a commendable 23 percent reduction in overall crime, alongside a significant 30 percent decrease in serious offenses. Notably, crimes against women have fallen by 30 percent, while crimes against children witnessed a remarkable 45 percent drop. Additionally, illicit drug-related cases have decreased by 14 percent, showcasing effective law enforcement efforts.
Despite these positive trends, road fatalities have seen an uptick. In response, SSP Lesikimaloku has called for the implementation of stronger and more innovative traffic safety measures to address this escalating concern. He emphasized that public trust relies not only on crime reduction but also on police officers maintaining professional standards and ensuring public safety at all times.
The focus on ethical policing and community trust during this festive season is a step towards building a safer environment for all citizens. The police department aims to foster a strong relationship with the community, reinforcing their commitment to ethical practices alongside their ongoing efforts to combat crime.
