The Police M-PAiSA Task Force is intensifying its efforts to address the rising incidents of scams targeting users of the M-PAiSA platform, particularly amidst the distribution of $200 back-to-school financial assistance from the government. Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has called on parents and guardians to exercise heightened vigilance during this critical period.

Emphasizing the importance of responsible financial practices, Chew strongly recommends that adults personally handle the withdrawals of the assistance funds, rather than allowing children or unaccompanied individuals to manage these transactions. He cautioned that scammers may be waiting to exploit unsuspecting families during this busy time. “You don’t know who is at the sidelines exploring the opportunity to steal information or money,” he stated, highlighting the need for caution.

The advisory aligns with broader efforts by Fiji Police to combat an uptick in scams, particularly during the financially sensitive back-to-school season. Previous warnings have noted that scammers often use various communication platforms, including text messages, WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook, to solicit money or personal information under false pretenses. Chew reiterated the importance of being skeptical of unsolicited requests and safeguarding sensitive information such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and passwords.

To prevent falling victim to such schemes, the police are advocating for community awareness and education about common scams. Families are encouraged to engage in discussions about fraud tactics and to establish safe financial habits. By fostering an informed community, families can collectively enhance their resilience against financial exploitation.

In summary, this initiative highlights the importance of vigilance and secure financial practices, aiming to protect families from potential fraud during this significant time of year. By prioritizing safety and remaining informed, communities can create a supportive environment where individuals navigate their finances confidently and without fear of exploitation.

This proactive approach not only serves to safeguard individual families but also strengthens community ties, promoting a safer environment for everyone. Together, with awareness and cooperation, families can thrive during this back-to-school season, contributing to a stronger and more secure local community.
