Police operations are ramping up in “red zones” throughout the country in an effort to combat crime and enhance public safety. Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua, confirmed that these high-crime areas have been identified across various divisions, including Ba, Rakiraki, Tavua, and Taveuni. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to address a worrying increase in crime rates, with a goal of achieving a 10 percent reduction in overall crime and a 70 percent detection rate.

Naivalurua stated that daily incident reports are being analyzed to identify gaps in operations and to better inform the deployment of police resources. There will be an increased police presence in the identified red zones starting this month and continuing through October, with the aim of reversing the trend of rising crime.

The Minister emphasized the importance of public cooperation in these efforts, noting, “This particular work for operations to work, it needs the support, not only the support of the public but a very close cooperation between the police and the public through trust and the building of confidence.” Despite recognizing the unpredictable nature of crime, he pointed out the significance of tracking crime patterns over time to inform police strategies.

Recent statistics indicate a notable decrease in certain types of crime, such as aggravated burglary and robbery, suggesting that the intensified operations focused on these red zones may be yielding positive outcomes. Additionally, improved technological resources, like CCTV systems, are being incorporated to enhance evidence collection, which could further bolster police effectiveness.

This shift towards proactive policing and community engagement not only aims to reduce crime rates but also to rebuild trust between law enforcement and communities. The deployment of dedicated task forces and innovative strategies suggests a hopeful path forward in maintaining public safety in Fiji. As these reforms take shape, there is a strong potential for significant improvements in community safety and confidence in the police force.
