Police in Labasa have made multiple arrests related to the possession of illegal drugs at the municipal market since the beginning of the year. Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, emphasized that these arrests serve as a strong warning to those involved in drug trafficking.
Among those arrested was a 35-year-old farmer from Kilikoso, who was found with nine sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Similarly, a 42-year-old unemployed man from Qelewaqa was apprehended at the Labasa Market Taxi Stand with dried leaves believed to be marijuana. In yet another case, a 40-year-old man from Qelewaqa was arrested at the Labasa Bus Stand in possession of 11 sachets of the same substance. Additionally, a chef from Valebasogo was arrested on January 2 after authorities discovered four sachets of dried leaves he allegedly held.
In a separate incident in Tukavesi, Cakaudrove, police discovered containers with 334 green plants thought to be marijuana. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, reported that drug-related arrests are a daily occurrence and expressed gratitude to village leaders for providing timely information that aids law enforcement.
The efforts by the police have been praised by Waisea Makulau, vice-president of the Labasa Market Vendors and Farmers Association. He highlighted the importance of continuous operations to ensure that market spaces are not exploited for illegal activities.
