Two individuals have been apprehended following the discovery of numerous large packages of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana on Cunningham Old Road yesterday afternoon.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, reported that authorities executed a search at the suspects’ residence, resulting in the confiscation of over 40 large parcels, more than 400 sachets, and a bottle of seeds, all believed to contain marijuana.
ACP Driu emphasized the importance of this operation within the Southern Division, noting that the substances were meant for distribution, and that investigations will focus on tracing their origins as well as investigating potential proceeds of crime.
As the festive season approaches, there is often a spike in drug sales, which some individuals resort to for extra income during holiday festivities. To combat this, the police are collaborating with partners to disrupt drug trafficking networks effectively.
Furthermore, ACP Driu mentioned that the police are seeking to engage community members, religious organizations, and civil society groups to promote awareness about the detrimental effects of illicit drugs.
The two suspects are currently in custody, and the seized materials have been sent for lab analysis.
This incident underlines the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat drug-related crimes, particularly as the holiday season approaches. Community engagement and awareness strategies could play a pivotal role in reducing drug abuse and its associated harms, fostering a healthier society.
