Police Crack Down on Drug Activity in Labasa Market

Police in Labasa have recently made a series of arrests related to the possession of illegal drugs at the municipal market, starting from January 1. Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, the Acting Divisional Police Commander for the North, emphasized that these actions serve as a firm warning to those engaged in drug trafficking.

Among those arrested was a 35-year-old farmer from Kilikoso, who was found in possession of nine sachets of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana. Additionally, a 42-year-old unemployed man from Qelewaqa was caught at the Labasa Market Taxi Stand with dried leaves believed to be marijuana. Another 40-year-old man from Qelewaqa was apprehended at the Labasa Bus Stand with 11 sachets of similar contents. Furthermore, a chef from Valebasogo was arrested on January 2 while possessing four sachets of the substance.

In a significant operation in Tukavesi, Cakaudrove, police uncovered containers with 334 green plants suspected to be marijuana. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu reported that drug-related arrests are an ongoing issue and expressed gratitude towards village headmen and community leaders for providing timely information, which aids in these arrests.

In response to these law enforcement efforts, Waisea Makulau, vice-president of the Labasa Market Vendors and Farmers Association, praised the police’s commitment and called for continued raids to combat illegal activities within the market.

This operation illustrates the ongoing efforts of the police to address drug-related issues and maintain safety in their communities. With proactive measures and community engagement, there is hope for a reduction in drug-related crimes and an improvement in public safety in the region.
