The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has instructed the Police Prosecution to forward the case of Sailosi Raikaci, a police constable and the son of Assistant Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci, to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP). Raikaci, aged 24, is facing a charge of theft related to an alleged incident where he stole a $65,000 minibus from the Nausori minibus stand.
During the proceedings, Resident Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi addressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest, noting that ACP Raikaci is the superior of Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shelveen Sharma. After a brief discussion, it was decided that the case would be managed by the ODPP to maintain impartiality.
Sergeant Sharma did not oppose Raikaci being released on bail but recommended stringent conditions for his release. These conditions include having one surety, surrendering travel documents, reporting to Nausori Police Station twice a week, a stop departure order, and avoiding any contact with witnessess.
Raikaci’s lawyer, Isoa Matanitobua, from the Ravono & Raikaci law firm, provided two sureties for the bail application. The court accepted Raikaci’s mother, Naomi Raikaci, who is also a lawyer, as one surety, while the other proposed surety was rejected.
Despite the serious allegations, it is important to remember that Raikaci has not yet been convicted, and the legal process must unfold appropriately. The case has been adjourned to January 13, 2025, with the first phase of disclosures already served, although there is a request for an additional 21 days to complete the necessary transcript work for the defense.
This incident underscores the importance of accountability and transparency within law enforcement, and it’s hoped that the proceedings will ensure that justice is served fairly and effectively. As the legal process continues, it serves as a reminder of the rule of law, where every individual, regardless of their background, is subject to scrutiny under the law.
