The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has instructed the Police Prosecution to forward the case of Sailosi Raikaci to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP). Raikaci, who is 24 years old and a police constable, made his initial appearance before Resident Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi, facing a charge of theft. He is accused of stealing a minibus worth $65,000 from the Nausori minibus stand on Tuesday evening.
During the proceedings, Magistrate Vaniqi expressed concern over a potential conflict of interest due to the fact that ACP Raikaci is Sergeant Shelveen Sharma’s superior. As a result, she decided it would be appropriate to transfer the case to the ODPP for further handling.
Sergeant Sharma did not oppose Raikaci being granted bail but suggested several strict conditions. These include the requirement for one surety, surrendering his travel documents, reporting to the Nausori Police Station twice a week, a stop departure order, and refraining from interfering with state witnesses. Raikaci’s lawyer, Isoa Matanitobua, presented two sureties, but only one was accepted—his mother, Naomi Raikaci, who is a principal lawyer at the firm.
Raikaci, who is currently stationed at the Nabua Police Station, will need to report to the Nausori Police Station, as this is his registered residence. The court learned that the first phase of disclosures had already been provided; however, an additional 21 days will be needed to transcribe recordings that need to be shared with the defense team. The case has been adjourned until January 13, 2025.
This case shines a light on the importance of maintaining integrity within law enforcement while ensuring that legal processes are upheld fairly and transparently. It serves as a reminder that everyone, regardless of their position, is subject to the law, which encourages accountability.
Summary: Sailosi Raikaci, a 24-year-old police constable, faces theft charges for allegedly stealing a minibus. The court has referred his case to the ODPP due to a potential conflict of interest. Raikaci was granted bail under strict conditions, and the case is scheduled for adjournment until January 2025.
