Police Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto appeared in the High Court in Suva facing serious charges related to an incident where he allegedly assaulted a school student, Vilikesa Bari, on November 17, 2023. The case, which was transferred from the Nausori Magistrate’s Court, involves a count of acting with intent to cause grievous harm.

During the recent proceedings before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull, State prosecutor Unaisi Ratukalou indicated that due to the seriousness of the charges, the matter may be sent back to the lower court. This highlights the rigorous examination typical in cases involving law enforcement officers.

Colamoto was granted bail under specific conditions, including a cash bond of $100, the necessity to provide two sureties, the surrender of all travel documents, and adherence to a stop departure order. He must also refrain from committing any further offenses and avoid contact with witnesses. His next appearance in court is scheduled for February 3, 2025, before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe, where he will receive further disclosures and has the opportunity to enter a plea.

This ongoing case underscores the judicial system’s commitment to enforcing accountability within law enforcement agencies, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their position, are held to the same legal standards. The legal processes in place provide a framework for justice and transparency, fostering hope for community trust in the system as it continues to unfold.

As the legal proceedings progress, it reaffirms the notion that justice seeks to serve both the accused and the victim, reinforcing the rule of law in society.
