“Police Commissioner Vows Transparency and Professionalism”

One of our main priorities is to win back the support and confidence of our communities, says Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew.

Fong Chew made this statement following a significant number of incidents involving police officers committing crimes, which has undermined the police force’s credibility.

He emphasized that police officers caught committing crimes are dealt with transparently.

“We recognize that a key element to achieving this is by improving service delivery and ensuring professionalism in our conduct and execution of duties,” he said.

“Our approach to handling officers involved in criminal activities is widely known, and we do not conceal this.”

“When an official report is made against an officer, our Internal Affairs Unit investigates their conduct, and the Criminal Investigation Department takes over if a criminal aspect is involved.”

“Due processes will be followed, and independent legal advice will be sought from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.”

“We are very transparent about this, and our monthly crime statistics report includes the number of police officers charged with various offenses, apart from the releases issued by the ODPP.”

“We are also reviewing our internal policies regarding officers involved in drugs, as we are committed to purging elements that harm the policing profession.”

He added that the force is also focused on improving service delivery to the public.

“Apart from addressing officers involved in criminal activities, we are actively working on enhancing service delivery and ensuring we get the basics right.”

“We acknowledge that complaints often arise from lack of feedback, poor complaint handling, and slow response times. We are looking into training more of our middle managers and supervisors, and holding officers accountable for their actions or inactions.”

“I want to reassure the public that we are dedicated to improving service delivery and upholding the integrity of policing.”
