Police Commissioner Stresses Transparency in Drug Trade Reporting

Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has stated that the identities of individuals reporting police officers involved in the drug trade must not be kept anonymous. He emphasized that to establish guilt, these informers must testify in court when required. Despite the challenges this presents, Mr. Fong Chew assured the public that the Fiji Police Force has established systems to handle reports concerning police misconduct.

The internal affairs unit of the Fiji Police Force, active since 2000, is specifically designed for this purpose. Mr. Fong Chew noted that this mechanism is effective, with recent actions taken against two officers due to similar allegations. He stressed the necessity of credible evidence, clarifying that witnesses need to provide legitimate information rather than hearsay.
