Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has challenged Dialogue Fiji (DF) to substantiate their claims that the Fiji Police Force is manipulating crime statistics. This response follows a statement from DF executive director Nilesh Lal, who asserted that the crime data reported does not correlate with the realities on the ground, particularly given the public’s concerns about theft, burglary, drug-related crimes, and violence. Lal expressed skepticism over the reported 14 percent decrease in overall crime rates, suggesting it reflects a disconnect between the police report and community experiences.

In a recent research survey conducted by DF, a majority of respondents identified crime and public safety as pressing issues, raising doubts about public confidence in the police. Lal pointed out that if citizens feel their reports are ignored, they may refrain from approaching law enforcement altogether, leading to a troubling cycle of disillusionment.

In response, Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged the importance of restoring public trust and emphasized the Fiji Police Force’s assurance that their crime statistics reflect data from reported incidents. He urged Lal to provide evidence for his claims, asserting that such allegations undermine the efforts of the police and the collaborative work with community and religious leaders.

Tudravu emphasized that while there may still be unreported cases, the police are actively investigating many incidents lodged, even if they date back months. This proactive attention underscores the force’s commitment to transparency and rebuilding trust within the community, aligning similarly with previous commitments he’s made regarding accountability and improved public relations.

The situation speaks to broader themes in Fiji about the relationship between law enforcement and community perception. By confronting accusations directly and maintaining an open dialogue, there is a potential pathway for enhanced collaboration between the police and the public, fostering a safer and more trustworthy environment in the country. These efforts highlight a hopeful direction where community involvement and police responsiveness can work hand in hand in addressing crime effectively.
