The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has made a compelling appeal to the public to report any credible information regarding police officers suspected of involvement in drug-related activities. In a recent media interview, Commissioner Fong Chew emphasized the critical need to uphold the integrity of law enforcement and to confront the ongoing drug crisis decisively.
He stated, “If police are involved, pass this information to us. I don’t want hearsay. I want credible information on who is involved, and we will take action.” The Commissioner made it clear that any officers found guilty of such activities would face severe consequences, citing cases where officers were stripped of their uniforms and taken to court for illegal dealings.
Mr. Fong Chew reminded police personnel of their oath of service and the dire repercussions of engaging in unlawful activities, especially those linked to drugs. He stressed, “This is the worst-case scenario – dealing with officers involved in drugs. We will not hesitate to act.”
Addressing the broader context of the drug crisis in Fiji and its surrounding region, he reaffirmed the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to combating these challenges. “We are confined in Fiji, but if you look at the region, they too are facing a similar crisis. For the Fiji Police Force, we’ll continue our fight – despite come what may – just to safeguard the population and the younger generations,” he noted.
Acknowledging the importance of public awareness in tackling the drug epidemic, Mr. Fong Chew expressed gratitude for the increased dialogue surrounding the issue, stating that a video had recently brought attention to the severity of the drug problem which had previously been suppressed. He encouraged the public to take an active role, urging vigilance: “If you see anything related to drugs, think twice.”
He also highlighted the establishment of the National Narcotics Bureau (NCB) as part of the broader initiative to address the drug crisis while reasserting the Police Force’s ongoing commitment to eradicating the problem. “I know there’s been a NCB, but as law enforcers, we cannot stop. We will continue until and unless the war ends,” he concluded.
