The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has made a compelling request for the public to come forward with credible information regarding police officers suspected of involvement in drug-related crimes. In a recent media interview, he underscored the crucial role of maintaining the integrity of law enforcement and taking decisive action against the ongoing drug crisis.

Mr. Fong Chew emphasized the need for verified reports, stating, “If police [are] involved, pass this information to us. I don’t want hearsay. I want credible information on who is involved, and we will take action.” He assured the community that any officers found guilty of such misconduct would face severe consequences, including dismissal from the force and prosecution. He referenced two recent cases in which implicated officers had their uniforms and salaries suspended, with subsequent legal proceedings initiated against them.

He also reminded police personnel of their duty to uphold their oaths, highlighting the strict repercussions for engaging in illegal activities, especially drug trafficking, which he described as the “worst-case scenario.”

Addressing the larger regional drug crisis, Mr. Fong Chew reaffirmed the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to countering this pressing issue. “We will continue our fight – despite come what may – just to safeguard the population and the younger generations,” he stated, acknowledging the significance of community engagement in battling drug-related problems.

Mr. Fong Chew expressed gratitude for increased public awareness, crediting social media for bringing critical discussions about drug issues to light. He encouraged citizens to play an active role in the fight against drugs, reflecting on the grim consequences that can arise from drug abuse.

Furthermore, he mentioned the introduction of the National Narcotics Bureau (NCB) as part of a comprehensive approach to address drug challenges but reassured that the Police Force remains dedicated to the ongoing fight against drug misuse. “We will continue until and unless the war ends,” he declared.

This clarion call for community involvement and stronger law enforcement mechanisms highlights a proactive approach to combat a severe public health issue and emphasizes the responsibility shared between the police and the public in ensuring a safer future for the younger generation.

In summary, the message is clear: the Fiji Police Force is committed to maintaining integrity among its ranks while tackling the drug crisis head-on, and the collaboration of the community is essential in this fight. This cooperative effort fosters hope for a safer and drug-free future for everyone.
