The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, along with key members of the police leadership, has taken a proactive step towards promoting a clean and drug-free police force by undergoing drug tests. This initiative is part of a broader effort to rebuild public trust in the police, which has been affected by incidents involving officers in drug-related activities.

Mr. Chew emphasized the importance of establishing a police organization free from all forms of drug misuse and corruption, stating, “We want a clean and drug-free institution, free from officers who use drugs or any corrupt practices linked to drugs.” He revealed that a new drug testing policy is on the horizon, which aims to address public concerns regarding police integrity.

In preparations for this policy, senior officers, including the Acting Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioners, will also undergo drug testing. This commitment to transparency and accountability is expected to set a precedent at all levels within the organization. Mr. Chew noted that the forthcoming policy is being crafted in consultation with the Solicitor General’s Office to ensure alignment with Fiji’s legal framework.

The new policy will incorporate best practices from international law enforcement agencies as part of a comprehensive approach to mitigate drug-related misconduct. Mr. Chew highlighted the necessity of maintaining high professional standards within the police to ensure effective policing of drug-related offenses.

This move reflects a hopeful commitment to reform and improvement within the police department, aiming to foster an environment of integrity and accountability.
