The Police boxing team had an impressive start at the Sukuna Bowl Boxing competition held at the LICI Court in Suva on Tuesday, winning seven out of the 11 bouts. The team’s captain, Jone Davule, a representative of National Amateur Boxing, set the tone for the day by securing a victory against the Army’s Pita Nasowaqa via points in his first fight.
In the lightweight division, Petero Vunivalu also emerged victorious, defeating Army competitor Ratu Kelevi Mawi. Conversely, the Army team did showcase its strength, with Samuela Naqari achieving a victory over Jone Tuitabu in the 80 to 86kg weight category. Additionally, the Army saw wins from fighters Rusiate Qalo, Noa Yabakidrau, and Meli Nailumu.
The highly anticipated boxing competition is set to continue with finals scheduled for today, promising more exciting matches as teams compete for the championship.
As the event progresses, it offers a wonderful opportunity for local athletes to display their skills and foster camaraderie between rival teams, which can lead to stronger community ties in sports.
