Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has emphasized that no one, including police officers, is above the law, following the release of video surveillance that allegedly shows a police officer purchasing illicit drugs. Tikoduadua stated that such behavior undermines the credibility of the police force and is unacceptable.
He highlighted the importance of accountability and trust within the police institution, asserting that the law must be upheld by all. “We are accountable to the people, and this is why trust is important for the institution, and trust is built,” Tikoduadua remarked. He stressed that police officers across Fiji are expected to maintain professionalism and adhere to the law, as the public does not expect those in uniform to engage in illegal activities.
This could serve as an important reminder that accountability is essential in maintaining public trust, and rectifying such issues can lead to a stronger and more respected police force. The commitment to uphold the law, regardless of one’s position, reflects a hopeful direction towards enhancing integrity within law enforcement. By addressing these concerns openly, the government aims to foster more robust community relations and improve the overall perception of the police service.
