In Poland’s ongoing presidential election, new exit polls show conservative historian Karol Nawrocki leading with 50.7% of the vote against liberal Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski, who stands at 49.3%. This dramatic turnaround comes after an initial exit poll suggested Trzaskowski was slightly ahead, which had prompted him to declare victory, stating, “We won,” though he acknowledged the narrow margin, calling it “razor’s edge.”

The official results are expected to be released on Monday morning by the state electoral commission. Nawrocki’s supporters are encouraged by the new poll, with him expressing optimism that they may “wake up tomorrow with President Karol Nawrocki.” Both candidates have proposed to be inclusive in their governance, as Trzaskowski pledged to represent all Poles, while Nawrocki emphasized hope amid the tightly contested race.

The president of Poland, while largely a ceremonial role, wields significant power to veto legislation — power which the current incumbent, Andrzej Duda, has previously used to block Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s attempts at judicial reforms and liberalizing abortion laws. Should Trzaskowski’s lead hold, it could facilitate further pro-European legislative efforts under Tusk, who has been blocked by a resistant government coalition.

Contrastingly, a Nawrocki presidency would likely lead to continued tensions between the head of government and the president, potentially strengthening the national conservative Law and Justice party (PiS), which might see an opportunity to regain momentum for future elections.

Both candidates advocate for continued support for Ukraine, although they differ significantly in their approaches to the European Union, with Trzaskowski favoring a strong pro-European agenda and Nawrocki favoring a more nationalist stance that prioritizes Polish sovereignty.

These unfolding events highlight a significant moment in Poland’s political landscape, reflecting similar themes observed in other European elections, including Romania, where a centrist candidate prevailed against a right-wing populist. It signifies a potential shift as voters mobilize against rising nationalism, suggesting a broader European trend towards pro-European integration and unity in the face of challenges like the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The vibrancy of these elections illustrates the importance of active civic engagement, with both candidates energized in their campaigns, presenting opportunities for dialogue and participation among the electorate. It is a hopeful reminder that democratic processes continue to engage and reflect the desires and values of the populace.
