Transparency International in Papua New Guinea (TIPNG) has raised alarms over the possibility of another electoral disaster in the country, emphasizing the pressing need for reforms following the failings observed in the 2022 elections. The watchdog has been closely monitoring the electoral process for two decades and has expressed grave concerns about the management and execution of past elections.
According to TIPNG, the 2022 elections were marred by significant issues, leading to what has been termed the worst election-related violence in PNG’s history. The organization noted extensive failings across all stages of the electoral process—ranging from preparation and conduct to delivery and declaration. In particular, there were glaring inaccuracies in the electoral roll, ineffective enforcement of election laws, and disruptions during ballot counting, which culminated in chaotic declarations for certain seats and rampant election-related violence.
A Special Parliamentary Committee formed after the 2022 elections provided Parliament with 70 recommendations intended to address these issues, yet a year later, these proposals have yet to be debated by members of parliament. Peter Aitsi, chairman of TIPNG, highlighted the critical need for sustained planning and preparation, stressing that solutions cannot be implemented through last-minute fixes and called for immediate action from leaders and the Electoral Commissioner.
TIPNG further criticized the recent budgetary provisions, pointing out that the allocation to the Electoral Commission had not increased, which jeopardizes the necessary resources needed for election preparations. This shortfall is seen as a serious threat to the integrity and effectiveness of the upcoming 2027 elections.
In summary, TIPNG’s concerns reflect a critical juncture for the democratic processes in PNG, urging government officials and election organizers to take earnest measures to prevent past mistakes from repeating in future elections. The hope remains that with proactive engagement from leaders, necessary reforms can be achieved to ensure a fair and secure electoral environment, fostering trust and stability within the nation’s democratic framework.
