Transparency International in Papua New Guinea has raised concerns about the potential for another electoral crisis in the upcoming 2027 elections. The watchdog organization criticized the government’s inaction to address the electoral deficiencies observed during the 2022 elections, which were marked by severe violence and mismanagement, arguably the worst in the country’s history.

According to TIPNG, which has monitored elections for over two decades, the 2022 electoral process exhibited numerous systemic flaws. These included significant errors in the electoral roll, a lack of enforcement against infractions, failure to adhere to constitutional mandates, and disruptions during ballot counting, all contributing to widespread chaos and violence.

A Special Parliamentary Committee had previously presented 70 recommendations to parliament after the 2022 elections, but these suggestions remain unaddressed. TIPNG Chair Peter Aitsi highlighted the critical need for ongoing electoral planning and resources, stressing that last-minute solutions will not suffice given the complexities of election management. He questioned the Electoral Commissioner and the government on their plans to suffice the established requirements while emphasizing the urgency for action.

Furthermore, TIPNG noted that the recent budget for 2025 did not increase funding for the Electoral Commission. The lack of adequate resources to prepare for elections, particularly in non-election years, poses a significant risk to the integrity and effectiveness of the electoral process in 2027.

This situation underlines an important opportunity for reform and improvement in PNG’s electoral system. With a proactive approach and the political will to implement the necessary changes, there exists a chance to strengthen democracy and restore confidence in the electoral process moving forward. The upcoming years could allow for constructive dialogue and reforms that could prevent the recurring issues faced in past elections, ultimately leading to a more stable and accountable political environment in Papua New Guinea.

In summary, while the challenges ahead are daunting, they also present a pivotal moment for PNG’s leadership to demonstrate their commitment to democracy and the political process, ensuring the integrity of future elections.
