PNG Rugby Union Suspended: What’s Next for the Team?

The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has suspended the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union’s membership due to multiple compliance failures. This decision comes after a detailed independent investigation and extensive discussions regarding the rugby union’s failure to meet the standards set by Oceania Rugby.

Effective immediately, the suspension is linked to ongoing issues, including PNG Rugby’s non-participation in essential competitions, such as the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens repechage qualification tournament. Additionally, concerns raised by Provincial Unions about the conduct of the union’s board and management contributed to this decision.

As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will forfeit its voting rights within the union and will be prohibited from participating in Oceania Rugby competitions and development programs. Furthermore, funding allocated to the union has been postponed.

Frank Puletua, General Manager of Oceania Rugby, emphasized the seriousness of this decision: “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to the non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we were compelled to take this step, keeping in mind the best interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby. I am confident that PNG will activate its true potential on the national and world rugby stage soon. The Executive Board remains committed to supporting PNG Rugby in its efforts to regain full membership status within Oceania Rugby.”
