The Oceania Rugby Executive Board has suspended the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Rugby Union’s membership due to several compliance issues. This decision comes after an independent inquiry and extensive discussions about the organization’s failure to meet Oceania Rugby’s established standards.
The immediate suspension stems from ongoing problems, including PNG Rugby not participating in essential events such as the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championships in Brisbane and the Olympic Sevens repechage qualification tournament. Additionally, concerns from Provincial Unions regarding the behavior of the board and management also played a crucial role in this decision.
As a result of the suspension, PNG Rugby will forfeit its voting privileges within the union and will be excluded from Oceania Rugby competitions and development programs. Moreover, funding to the union has been put on hold.
Frank Puletua, General Manager of Oceania Rugby, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating, “The decision to suspend the membership of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union was not taken lightly. However, due to the non-compliance with the Notice of Orders issued in July, we were compelled to take this step, keeping in mind the best interests of all stakeholders involved with PNG Rugby.”
Puletua expressed optimism for PNG’s future, saying, “I am confident that PNG will activate its true potential on the national and world rugby stage soon. The Executive Board remains committed to supporting PNG Rugby in its efforts to be recognized as a full member of Oceania Rugby again.”
