Oceania Rugby has officially announced a six-month extension of the suspension imposed on the Papua New Guinea Rugby Union (PNGRU). This decision comes as PNGRU has yet to provide necessary documentation regarding its operations, following nearly a year of discussions and failed compliance resulting from allegations of misconduct and mismanagement raised by provincial members in June 2024.

The ongoing issues have had significant repercussions for PNG Rugby, notably affecting the women’s national team’s participation in the 2024 Oceania Rugby Women’s XVs Championships in Brisbane, as well as the absence of both men’s and women’s national sevens teams from the Olympic qualifiers in Monaco. These developments further underscore the urgent need for reform within PNGRU to address governance concerns and fulfill constitutional obligations.

In response to the pressing situation, Oceania Rugby has appointed an independent panel composed of esteemed professionals from across the Oceania region. This panel is charged with evaluating PNGRU’s operational policies and financial statements to provide a thorough and fair assessment that will assist the Oceania Rugby Executive Board in making decisions regarding the future of the organization.

Frank Puletua, General Manager of Oceania Rugby, expressed disappointment over the suspension extension but emphasized the necessity of the independent review process. He reaffirmed PNG’s essential role within the Oceania Rugby community and voiced hope that this challenging period could offer an opportunity for PNGRU to implement vital reforms.

“The decision to extend PNGRU’s suspension is in the best interests of rugby and its stakeholders,” Puletua stated. “We remain committed to seeing rugby not only survive but thrive in Papua New Guinea.” He expressed optimism that with concerted efforts for improvement, PNGRU could regain its standing within the regional rugby framework.

The current situation presents both challenges and opportunities for the PNGRU, as it must navigate through compliance issues while realigning itself with effective governance practices. This effort is crucial not only for the immediate future of rugby in Papua New Guinea but also for its potential to reclaim its status in international competitions.

This could serve as a pivotal moment that leads to meaningful changes and renewed hope for the future of rugby in Papua New Guinea.
