Tribal conflicts in the Papua New Guinea Highlands have been reportedly fueled by affluent individuals, according to Justice Minister and Attorney-General Pila Niningi. He highlighted that local leaders, businessmen, and Members of Parliament in Enga Province have funded tribal battles by providing both financial support and weaponry.

Niningi emphasized the importance of holding these influential figures accountable, stressing that the courts bear the responsibility of prosecuting those involved in these violent clashes. With the recent reappointment of Justice Graham Ellis to a three-year term at the National Court in Wabag, Niningi expressed optimism that this would enhance the prosecution efforts.

“The tribal fighting in Enga is not caused by petty criminals,” Niningi remarked, underscoring the need for serious action against those enabling such violence. He believes that successful prosecutions would signify significant progress in addressing the underlying issues fueling tribal warfare.

To strengthen law and order, Niningi called for a collective effort, asserting that his ministry’s offices will continue to support these initiatives. He praised Justice Ellis for his proactive and firm approach to judicial matters, asserting that his leadership is critical in ensuring accountability among state officials.

Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas echoed Niningi’s sentiments, commending Ellis’s recent contributions that have reportedly led to a decline in law and order issues in the province. He acknowledged the challenges of the region, noting that many judges avoid positions there due to its difficult reputation.

This renewed commitment to justice and accountability holds promise for improving the situation in Enga, fostering hope for a more peaceful environment in the Highlands as authorities work to dismantle the cycle of violence instigated by powerful local figures.
