Transparency International in Papua New Guinea has raised alarms about the potential for another electoral disaster as the nation approaches the 2027 elections. The organization has pointed to the lack of action to address failures from the tumultuous 2022 elections, which were marked by significant violence, inaccuracies, and mismanagement.
In its analysis, Transparency International PNG (TIPNG) outlined that the electoral process in 2022 was severely flawed, highlighting deficiencies at every level—from preparation and execution to ballot counting and declaration. Notably, they identified major inaccuracies in the electoral roll, a failure to enforce electoral laws, and rampant chaos during vote counting. These issues culminated in what was described as the worst election-related violence in the country’s history.
After the 2022 elections, a Special Parliamentary Committee provided 70 recommendations aimed at rectifying these electoral shortcomings. However, nearly a year later, these proposals remain unaddressed by Members of Parliament. TIPNG’s chair, Peter Aitsi, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that without serious and genuine action, the structural problems experienced in the previous elections would persist. He stressed the importance of a well-supported five-year electoral planning cycle and criticized the recent 2025 Budget for not increasing the funding for the Electoral Commission. This underfunding poses a significant risk to the preparation and integrity of the upcoming elections.
Aitsi’s comments underscore the need for immediate reform, encouraging leaders and administration to take heed of the alarming issues highlighted by TIPNG. He called for a proactive approach to safeguard the democratic foundations of Papua New Guinea, pointing out that crucial steps need to be taken well before the elections.
This situation presents an opportunity for the government and electoral bodies to implement widespread reforms that not only enhance the electoral process but also build public trust and improve governance in the future. By addressing these concerns head-on, Papua New Guinea can work towards a more secure and democratic electoral environment in the upcoming cycle.
In summary, TIPNG issues a stark warning about the electoral preparations for 2027, emphasizing the need for reforms following the turbulent 2022 elections. Leaders are urged to take action to ensure the integrity and effectiveness of future elections.
