Papua New Guinea’s Minister for Tourism, Belden Namah, has underscored the country’s rich cultural diversity and traditions as significant catalysts for economic growth, job creation, and the strengthening of regional connections. PNG is home to over 800 languages and more than 1,000 tribes, making it a vibrant tapestry of art, music, dance, and culinary heritage that has tremendous potential to captivate a global audience.
During his address at the Indonesia–Pacific Cultural Synergy forum in Kupang, Minister Namah emphasized the importance of tourism in celebrating national identity and community heritage. He noted that when effectively harnessed, tourism can serve as an engine for inclusive economic growth, employment opportunities, and national pride.
Namah highlighted the cultural similarities between the Melanesian peoples of PNG and those in Indonesia, pointing towards the possibilities for cultural collaboration to foster unity, peace, and constructive dialogue across the Pacific region. “Cultural synergy is uniting our peoples,” he remarked, calling on regional neighbors to celebrate shared heritage while exploring sustainable tourism and cultural industry opportunities.
He also drew inspiration from the successful integration of tourism and culture in Fiji, noting its status as a model for how cultural initiatives can fuel economic prosperity. “Fiji stands as an example of how culture can drive economic growth,” he stated, stressing that PNG must strategically leverage its rich cultural wealth to generate jobs, empower communities, and enhance national revenue.
Since assuming office, Namah has envisioned a strategy to indigenize the nation’s heart and culture while modernizing infrastructure and promoting a spirit of peace and unity amidst its diverse populace. He reaffirmed the significance of preserving authentic traditions—ranging from traditional music and dance to culinary arts—while also embracing modern technology and social media to elevate PNG’s tourism potential.
In his concluding remarks, Namah highlighted the inclusive nature of tourism, allowing for participation from all sectors of society, from the youth to the elders, ensuring that everyone can share in the benefits of the growing tourism landscape.
