PM’s Power Play: Is Rabuka Spreading Himself Too Thin?

Opposition MP Premila Kumar has expressed strong criticism of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent decision to assume responsibility for both the Immigration Department and the Fiji Police Force. She argues that this consolidation of power may lead to the Prime Minister becoming overextended, raising concerns about his confidence in his cabinet’s abilities.

Kumar highlighted the need for balanced governance, stating that given the range of pressing issues facing Fiji—such as high living costs, challenges within the healthcare system, drug-related problems, public safety, and a brain drain in vital sectors—it is crucial to distribute responsibilities across the government effectively. She emphasized the importance of focusing leadership on individual portfolios to achieve tangible results.

In defense of his decision, Mr. Rabuka indicated that his temporary oversight of the Immigration Department stems from ongoing investigations within that department. He noted that this arrangement would only be in place until the resolution of the situation involving former minister Pio Tikoduadua, who stepped aside to allow for a transparent inquiry into allegations regarding passport irregularities linked to the children of individuals connected to the Grace Road human rights issues.

Despite the backlash, Rabuka pointed out that previous administrations also had concentrated powers and minimal clarity in their cabinet roles. He is ensuring that dedicated attention is given to the critical ministries during this transitional period.
