Opposition MP Premila Kumar has criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s decision to assume control of the Immigration Department and the Fiji Police Force, expressing concerns that he may be overextending himself. Kumar suggested that this move raises doubts about Rabuka’s faith in his government’s ability to manage its various responsibilities effectively.
She pointed out that concentrating so much power in a single office contradicts the principle of collective governance, particularly with a large pool of ministers in the administration. Emphasizing the importance of dedicated leadership for each ministry, Kumar warned that managing multiple significant portfolios—such as Foreign Affairs, Climate Change, and now Immigration and Police—could lead to insufficient attention being given to urgent issues facing Fiji.
Kumar highlighted several pressing challenges the nation is grappling with, including rising living costs, a struggling healthcare system, drug-related problems, and a brain drain affecting sectors like education and health. She urged the government to empower its ministers to tackle these issues effectively rather than consolidating power in the hands of the Prime Minister.
In defense of his decision, Rabuka explained that he is temporarily taking on these responsibilities due to ongoing investigations within the Immigration Department. He mentioned that this arrangement would be in place only until the scrutiny concludes and took a jab at Kumar’s party for previously having a ‘Minister for Everything’ during their administration, criticizing their cabinet’s lack of direction.
Rabuka’s reassignment of these vital departments will take effect from December 1, following careful consideration after Minister Pio Tikoduadua agreed to step aside for an investigation into recent allegations surrounding unauthorized passport issuance linked to the Grace Road situation. Tikoduadua continues to manage portfolios related to defense and military affairs.
This situation reflects a significant moment in Fijian politics as the Prime Minister navigates a complex landscape of governance. It also opens a discussion on the balance of power and the effectiveness of leadership within the government structure.
Despite the challenges, there is an opportunity for the government to emerge stronger by addressing these criticisms and demonstrating effective management of its responsibilities moving forward. A commitment to transparency and accountability can bolster public trust and ensure that essential services are delivered effectively to the people.
