Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has voiced his concerns regarding Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew’s recent comments, which hinted at corruption within the police force. During a media event, Rabuka expressed his disappointment, emphasizing that such remarks could negatively impact the morale of police officers.

“If he (Juki Fong) has evidence of corruption, then investigations and arrests should ensue,” stated Rabuka. He criticized the approach of making generalized claims about corruption, arguing that it demotivates the entire police force. “Labeling police officers broadly as corrupt is very detrimental,” he added.

Rabuka stressed that these statements undermine the credibility of law enforcement and convey an inappropriate message to both officers and the community. He also pointed out that a new police commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, will take over on February 3, 2025, who could provide a fresh perspective on these issues.

In summary, Rabuka’s comments signify a protective stance for the police force while calling for accountability and evidence before making claims of systemic corruption.

This situation underscores the importance of clear communication and responsibility within law enforcement agencies. As the new commissioner approaches, there is hope for a constructive dialogue that enhances the integrity and morale of the police, ultimately leading to better community relations.
