Former Permanent Secretary to the Office of the Prime Minister, Jioji Kotobalavu, has applauded Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent decision to appoint Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) to significant ministerial roles, describing it as a “smart move.” According to Kotobalavu, this strategic initiative has the potential to greatly enhance the leadership of the People’s Coalition Government.

Under Section 92 of the 2013 Constitution, Prime Minister Rabuka possesses the authority to appoint ministers and assistant ministers, a power traditionally limited to members of the ruling party. However, Kotobalavu pointed out that this reshuffle is unique because it includes MPs from the opposition, all of whom have received “cross-bench” status, a designation approved by the Speaker of Parliament, legitimizing their involvement in these ministerial roles.

Kotobalavu believes this reshuffle could lead to significant positive outcomes for governmental functionality, including improved service delivery to the public. He emphasized that Rabuka’s decision not only fortifies the Coalition Government’s governance capacity but also enhances his leadership role within both the government and his People’s Alliance party.

Plans are also underway to introduce Assistant Ministers in critical areas such as Public Works, Justice, and Health, aimed at relieving some of the Prime Minister’s increasing workload and facilitating efficient governance.

This move towards inclusivity and cooperation across party lines reflects a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s political landscape, indicating that bipartisan collaboration can lead to a more unified and effective governance structure. By incorporating opposition members into vital positions, PM Rabuka’s initiative paves the way for better political relations and enhanced public service delivery, presenting a promising future for the coalition government as it strives to address the needs of the Fijian populace.

This strategic reshuffling showcases not only a willingness to adapt and innovate in leadership but also represents a broader commitment to representing diverse voices in governance. The enhanced collaboration may serve as a herald for more effective leadership in the coming years.
