Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has openly criticized Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew for his recent comments that implied corruption among some police officers. At a media event yesterday, the Prime Minister expressed his disappointment, stating that such remarks could be detrimental to the morale of the entire police force.
Rabuka argued that if Juki Fong possesses evidence of wrongdoing among officers, those individuals should be thoroughly investigated and held accountable. He emphasized the negative impact of generalizing the issue, pointing out that labeling the entire police department as “infested” with corruption undermines the integrity and motivations of dedicated officers.
The Prime Minister further stressed that such statements convey a harmful message to both police personnel and the public, compromising trust in law enforcement. He noted that a new police commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, will be taking office on February 3, 2025, and reassured that a fresh perspective on the police force would soon be forthcoming.
This situation highlights the importance of responsible communication in leadership, especially in law enforcement, where public confidence is crucial. With the new police commissioner on the horizon, there is hope for a renewed commitment to integrity and professionalism within the police force, potentially leading to a stronger and more unified law enforcement agency moving forward.
